PLAYOFFS

SQUIRT

Wednesday March 24th 7:00pm
Sabres (White) - 2,    Islanders - 2

You know to grow your nails long before you go to see these two teams play, your not going to have much left after the game. As was the case again when these teams matched up to see who was going to make it to the championship finals.  All season long these teams have been equally matched and shared a give and take relationship. Tonights game , both teams did not feel much like giving, they just wanted to "Take" the game !!

First Period: Both teams were feeling each other out. No major shots or break aways. However, the puck spent alot of time in the Sabres end. No score at the end of the first period.

Second Period: Islanders start off the scoring with a nice shot by #3 Nick Hornquist. Sabres were finally able to get the puck out of their zone with a quick break away by #3 Kyle Ebert to tie up the game. Islanders looking to take the period take another goal to get the lead again by #11 Daniel Vail. Islanders 2, Sabres 1 at the end of the second.

Third Period: Still anyones game at this point and Sabres have to get something going "NOW". If you have any nails left......now is the time to chew them. With 3:34 left in the third period, #11 Keegan O'Connor score the tie winning goal. Islanders pull their goalie and try one last push to get the puck past #1 Elliott Szabala (Sabres Goalie), unable to complete the task. Even Sabres #10 Matt Bartosz has a breakaway on an open net and was denied by #1 Islander Owen Bean. Buzzer sounds, game ends and coaches / parents breathe a sigh of relief. Tie score 2 to 2.

Sabres advance to the championship game on Sunday March 28th.

MITE

Black Hawks 2   Capitals 0

Spencer Kwilos was the difference in this tightly contested game as he led his Black Hawks team to another playoff victory. The Black Hawks' Netminder turned away every shot - and there were a lot of them! Nick Torchia found the back of the Cap's net in the second. Eric Duma got the helper. In the Third, Nathan Lockwood put away a David Hayes rebound. Timmy Stuart also picked up an assist on the play. The 2-0 win was good enough for 4 out of 5 points in a tight playoff race.

PEE WEE

White Sabres 5  Stars 4

Alex Suchan's hat trick wasn't enough to get his team past the red-hot Sabres as the Stars fell victim to the Sabres four-game winning streak. After a shaky start, falling 1-0 on Suchan's goal in the first, the Sabres answered with a two-goal second period and the session ended in a 2-2 tie thanks to goals from the Stars' Steve Budniewski and the Sabres' Liam Grogan and Jay Bergmann. Bergmann would add another in the third along with tallies from TJ Wolf and Jack Miller. Suchan's third goal came late in the third to pull the Stars within one, but that's as close as it would get. The Sabres added another 4 points to reach 19.5 with one game remaining.

Sunday March 21, 2010
Squirt Sabres (White) vs. Stars

First Period: Both teams feeling the other team out with lots of back and forth skating. Stars have the edge in this period, but were unable to capitalize on their efforts. Period ends in a tie 0 to 0.

Second Period: With tension rising, it wasn't too long before someone would score. That someone was non other than #7 Jacob Hangen for the Stars with a high shot over Sabres Goalie Elliott Szabala. This period was taken by Stars 1, Sabres 0.

Third Period: Enough is enough and the Sabres rallied back with a pass from behind the net by Austin Lederhouse to Benjamin McEwen for the score. Just beating Stars goalie Nick Merlino.
Sabres trying to get momentum going with a few breakaways, but being shot down by Nick Merlino. Finally, #3 Kyle Ebert was able to get off a high shot to beat the Stars goalie and take a 2 to 1 lead.  Stars tried rallying back by pulling their goalie, but were unable to get past the blue line by the defensive mode of the Sabres.

Final score: Sabres=2,  Stars =1

2010 Squirt Playoffs
Sunday, March 21, 2010
11 AM, Nike Base
Attendance: 16,433
Islanders – 2, Capitals – 1

When the Hamburg Municipal Hockey Association commenced its training camp for the 2009-2010 Squirt season; players, coaches, parents, and grandparents could have only hoped that our league’s players might raise their skills and playing ability to the level displayed on Sunday morning at the Nike Base in front of 16,433 raucous supporters.  The outcome of the game wasn’t decided until the final second ticked off the clock as the Islanders barely edged the talented Capitals, 2-1, acquiring four out five possible playoff points.
From the opening faceoff, neither team wanted to be the first to flinch nor it wasn’t until very late in the first stanza that the Islanders could solve Caps’ keeper Paul Haikathorn.  The Islanders success was the result of a five man effort that worked the puck around the zone while paying a tough physical price to earn the marker.
Joe LoTempio won the face off but the Capitals picked up the loose puck to try to clear the zone.  Danny Vail relentlessly kept the puck in the zone and sent the puck to Joe Chambers who found left winger Nate Schifferle along the half wall.  “Schiff” battled against two Capitals along the boards until he was able to feed the puck to LoTempio in the corner.  Lo Tempio wrestled with the defense and ripped a pass to a waiting Jonah Kozak in the slot.  Kozak settled the perfect pass and deftly launched the puck into the top left corner over the sprawling Capitals’ keeper with only 17 seconds left in the opening period for a 1-0 Islanders lead that would carry into the second frame.
Three minutes into the second period, the Capitals Nick Lupka finally found a way to solve the Isles’ goalie Jacob Genzel.  The goal was just rewards for a Capitals team that has been on the rise for the second half of the season behind the play of Tristan Higgins, Connor Higgins, Connor Kwilos, and Harrison Rosen.
With 5:28 remaining in the second period, Nick Hornquist salvaged half a playoff point for the Isles as he picked up a clearing pass from Matt Russo and pulled away from the defense and deked his way to the Islanders second goal.  The 2-1 Islanders’ lead would hold up but not without the defensive prowess of the “Orange Crush’s” Joe “Killer” Kromer.

2010 Squirt Playoffs
Thursday, March 18, 2010
6 PM Nike Base
Islanders – 1
Retro Sabres – 1
The topsy-turvy 2010 Squirt Playoffs continued as two teams in the thick of the Squirt Playoff battled faced off in a prime time fixture in front of a standing room only crowd at the venerable Nike Base.  When the ice shavings settled, two evenly matched teams left the ice deadlocked at 1-1.  The Islanders and Retro Sabres both earned 2 ½ much needed points in the playoff race.
The two teams traded end to end rushes and huge goaltending saves until Dylan Winter put the Isles up 1-0 at the 7:00 mark of the first period courtesy of a Bryan Solinski assist.  The period featured numerous scoring chances by both teams.  Austin Schwartzmeyer looked more like Gilbert Perreault in his “old” Sabres jersey as he constantly set up camp in the Islanders end.
His counterpart on the Sabres was Danny “Vile” Vail who had at least half a dozen great scoring chances thwarted by Sabres’ net minder T.J. Pielscha.  The Islanders’ Joe LoTempio was equal to the task on the other end of the rink as the Islanders took a 1-0 advantage into the second period.
The Sabres and Islanders looked as if they might take the same score into the third period until the Sabres put forth, perhaps, the most tenacious thirty seconds of the city.  Michael Spencer, Ashton Raderli, Mike Ventresca, and Alex Roliczek put relentless pressure on the Islanders who could not escape the confines of their own defensive zone.  Jonathan “Amazing” Grace intercepted a desperation break out pass and deposited the biscuit in the cage to tie the game at 1-1 with 1:07 left in the second period.
The third period saw both teams valiantly try to put up another mark but both goaltenders and defenses just would not allow any of those notions.  Sirena Fitzery has numerous chances along with Nick Hornquist for the Islanders.  Brad Logan of the Sabres was equal to the task in the other offensive zone.
Joe Kromer and Jonah Kozak stayed at home for the Islanders defensive corps to preserve the tie as the Sabres continued their pressure.

SATURDAY MARCH 6
PW Sabres 4     PW Capitals 0
Reeling from a 2-1 loss and walking away with just 1 point in their Playoff opener, the Sabres were in a foul mood Saturday morning when the puck dropped. Just over 4 minutes into the first period Shawn Feuerstein lit the lamp and that one goal would not only take the period, but would prove the difference in the game as the Sabres went on to take the next two periods and the game in a 4-0 shut-out.Tyler Carlson and Liam Grogan both had a goal and an assist and TJ Wolf also added a timely score, as the Sabres got a very balanced scoring effort across all lines. Zach Hector was solid in goal stopping everything that came his way.

-----

SUNDAY MARCH 7
White Sabres 8     Retro Sabres 0
Bolstered by a solid effort on Saturday, the Sabres came out flying and Jack Hayes used that energy to pick off the puck from Alex Conomos, step around the Retro Sabres defender and bury the puck in the back of the net early in the first period. Tyler Carlson would add two goals and an assist and Jack Miller would light the lamp before the first session ended and the Sabres closed out the first period with a 4-0 lead. A goal from TJ Wolf sealed the second period and tallies from Jay Bergmann (2) and Reece Schara took the third. Zach Hector extended his shut-out streak to six straight periods as he kept the Retro Sabres off the score sheet.

-----

MONDAY MARCH 8
White Sabres 4    Black Hawks 0
The PW Black Hawks managed to slow the streaking Sabres by skating to a scoreless tie in the first period and ending a streak of 6 consecutive winning periods as each team skated away with a 1/2 point. But that would end as Jay Bergmann got his first of two goals early in the second period, while Zach Hector continued to dazzle in goal turning aside everything that came his way. In the third period, Jack Miller and Shawn Feuerstein notched goals to seal the game and preserve Zach Hector's third consecutive shut-out, propelling the Sabres forward with 14.5 out of a possible 15 points for the weekend.

Sunday 3/7/2010
Sabres (White) - 1,  Blackhawks - 0
In the most evenly matched game of the year, these two teams skated both ends of the ice.
The first two periods of the game were without a goal. Many of the players shooting just wide of the net , making it easy on the goaltending.
The third period was 0 - 0 up until the last second of the game in which Sabres forward #3 Kyle Ebert put an unassisted goal in the net to win the game at the buzzer.
Sabres goalie #1 Elliott Szabala posted the first shutout of the year for the team.
Clearly this game could have gone either way, but the pucked bounced the right way for the Sabres this time.

Friday, March 5, 2010   - 7 PM
Islanders – 5    Penguins - 2
The Islanders and Penguins put on a great playoff display in front of a prime time crowd at the Nike Base.  The first period nearly ended in a scoreless draw until Dylan Winter broke the deadlock with a nifty backhander from the slot to make the score 1-0.  A great pass by Bryan Solinski off the face off set up the goal.

In the second period, the Isles took a two goal advantage off a fortuitous bounce and the heads up play of Danny Vail.  Jonah Kozak rushed into the corner to win the puck and started toward the net.  His pass to Sirena Fitzery bounced around the slot until Vail pumped home the loose puck for a 2-0 Islanders’ lead.

Three minutes later, Erik Pawelski used his patented wrap around move to give the Islanders what seemed to be a strong 3-0 advantage.  The Penguins are a team that is improving with each week and each practice.  That work paid off dividends in the final two minutes of the second period.

At the 1:56 mark of the second, Jared Milley scored for the Pens and only 56 seconds later, the Penguins salvaged a playoff point with a goal by Josh Colangelo off a pass by Sam Attea.

The Penguins kept up the pressure with play from Shelby Kmidowski, Shane Curran, and Chris Damiani to put pressure on the Islanders.  Three minutes into the third, Bryan Solinski gave the Islanders their fourth goal from Owen Bean to regain the two goal lead.

On his next shift, it was Solinski lighting the lamp again on a pinpoint passing play from Winter for the 5-2 final.

Nick Hornquist earned the win in goal for the Islanders.  Joe Chambers and Nathan Schifferle played heads up games for the Isles.

Capitals 5, Sabres (Retro) 2
We into the swing of playoff hockey and these games are getting better and better.

The Sabres started the scoring very early in the game with less than 30 second gone. The goal scored by Mitchell Marcin assisted by Sean Kaiser caught the Capitals off guard. The Capitals were able to rebound a few minutes later with an unassisted goal by Mitchell Knihinicki. Capitals immediately followed up with a goal by Patrick Hart assisted by Brandon (B-man) Hosken and Mike McCarthy. The turning point of the game came with a minute left in the first period when Phillip Ryerse scored a power play goal assisted by John Kwiatkowski and Evan Graesser.

The Capitals continued to mount an attack thru most of the second period but it was the Sabres Alex Conomos who found the back of the net with 1:58 left. Game on with the score now 3-2.

Halfway thru the third an unassisted goal by Mitchell Knihinicki put the Capitals tally at 4. The next minute had Jacob Falcone beating the Sabres goaltender Gordon Grieble.  This was Falcones first goal of the season and was assisted by Chris Leonard.

The Capitals forwards Michael Reusch and John Busse had great games putting in the extra effort but were unable to get the puck in the net.

Extra effort was observed by Sabres Dylan Wagner. Dylan played an aggressive game but Capitals defenseman Mike McCarthy made some nice plays to naturalize Dylan.

Squirt Division

Squirt Capitals  -2  vs Retro Sabres  -1

The Squirt Capitals faced off against the Retro Sabres on 2/21 for the last game of the regular season schedule.  The game was a fast paced contest highlighted by strong goaltending by Paul "Bunyan" Hackathorn for the Caps and Colt Randon for the Sabres.

Joe Argy opened the scoring on a nice passing play from Nick Lupkin and Jack Rettig to take a 1-0 lead in the second period. Argy scored again off a nice individual effort  early in the 3rd to take a 2-0 lead. The Sabres finally got on the board when Alex Roliczek slammed home a rebound from close range with Peter Brooks getting the assist to pull to within 2-1.

Both goalies slammed the door the rest of the way.

Islanders – 5     Sabres – 2
In a game that was certainly a harbinger of playoff excitement to come, two teams that have become quite familiar with each other this season faced off in the regular season finale.

Jonah Kozak retrieved a loose puck in his end and tossed a perfect pass to a streaking Nick Hornquist who rushed up the left side of the ice.  Hornquist ripped a shot towards goal that deflected off a well positioned Danny Vail to give the Isles a 1-0 lead at the 8:20 mark of the first period.

With 1:26 remaining in the first stanza, Erik Pawelski fought to keep the puck in the offensive zone and fed the puck to Bryan Solinski.  Solinski’s initial wrap around try was thwarted by the stalwart goaltending of the Sabres’ Lucas Waite.  Solinski alertly picked up the loose puck and jammed it home for a 2-0 Islanders’ lead after one period of play.

The second period remained scoreless until the 2:20 mark when Jeremy Miska fed the puck to Vail who worked a “1-2” combo with Hornquist who beat a defenseman into the zone and scored to make the score 3-0 for the “orange crush” after two periods.

The Sabres are a talented team and launched an offensive attack to try and salvage the game.  At the 6:24 mark of the third, Keegan O’Connor closed the gap to 3-1.  O’Connor seized a puck in the neutral zone and made the Islanders pay for their defensive mistake.  The puck finally solved the riddle that was Islanders’ net minder Joe LoTempio.  The score would remain the same until Hornquist added another with less than three and a half minutes left in the final period.

Undaunted, the Sabres rallied once again only 16 seconds later.  Brandon Schott scored on a feed from Austin Lederhouse to give the blue and gold a spark and bring the score to within 4-2.

In the game’s waning moments, Dylan Winter and Trevor Fadale worked a pass into Pawelski who lit the lamp for the 5-2 final.  Game pucks were awarded by Coach Ben Hornquist to LoTempio and Miska for their fine play.  The Islanders finish the regular season with a record of 8-4.

Pee Wee Division

Capitals -1    Stars -1

There is no better way to get ready to watch some Olympic hockey than to watch the outstanding effort displayed in a youth hockey. This was a fun one to watch. The Capitals were once again involved in an evenly matched game facing the Stars.

Capitals started the scoring mid way thru the first period. Their only score was an unassisted goal by Mitchell Knihinicki. The Stars single goal scored by Alex Suchan and was assisted by Zack Witkowski came in the third period with only 4:06 left. The Stars applied great offensive pressure the entire game. Extra effort was observed by Stars forwards Jaxin Brown, Zack Witkowski and James Moores. The Capitals forwards Jacob Falcone and Tyler Ruhland had great games putting in the extra effort but were unable to get the puck in the net.

The Stars goaltender Matt Buss played a solid game. He did not let the opponent have many looks and the rebounds were almost non existent, preventing any second chances. Capitals goaltending effort by Josh Capasso was the difference maker for the Capitals.

GO USA!!

Squirt Division

Islanders  6,   Capitals  1
Nike Base – 8 AM
After a fantastic week of outdoor hockey, the HMHA returned to regular scheduled games at the Nike Base facility.  The Islanders entered the game looking to increase their league standings while the Capitals looked poised to pull an upset.
In the first period, the Capitals seemed to take their plan to heart by creating offensive chances and thwarting Islanders’ rushes throughout the period.  After the first stanza was finished, the game remained 0-0 but the scoreboard would be no harbinger of things to come in a fast, furious, and goal laden second period.
Just thirteen seconds into the second period, Nick Hornquist took a lead pass from Danny Vail and zipped a wrist shot in the Caps net for the 1-0 Isles lead.  Five minutes later, Hornquist would tally again with a little help from his friends.  The Islanders’ Jonah Kozak outworked two Capitals’ players in the corner to feed Joe Chambers in the slot.  Chambers then threaded a pass to a waiting Hornquist who made the score 2-0.
Less than two minutes later, the Islanders would increase their lead to 3-0 thanks to the teamwork of Erik Pawelski and Trevor Fadale.  Pawelski tied up a scrum of players only to pass the puck back to a waiting Fadale at the point.  In one motion, Fadale found the bottom corner of the net for the Islander lead.
The tenacious Capitals would not go quietly.  Relentless in their effort, the Caps capitalized on an Islander miscue in clearing the zone and trimmed the Islanders’ lead to 3-1.  Mike Guillo applied the pressure with a strong forecheck to steal the puck.  He then passed to a Joe Argy for the goal only twenty seconds after the Islanders last marker.
The Islanders responded quickly only one minute and nine seconds later.  Matt Russo took control of the zone and worked the puck into Kozak who put a one timer on the net that was saved by the Capitals goalie.  Kozak then beat a defender to the rebound and poked the loose biscuit over to Vail who easily made the score 4-1 to end the second period.
In the third period, the Islanders would score twice more.  At the 9:54 mark, Pawelski timed a perfect pass to Dylan Winter who scooped a backhander in for a 5-1 lead for the Isles.  Pawelski closed out the game’s scoring himself on a pass from Bryan Solinski for the 6-1 final.
Joe LoTempio earned another strong win in the nets for the Orange Crush who moved to 7-3 on the season.

After a scoreless first period, the Blackhawks got two goals on one shift early in the second period by David Hayes and Sean O'Meara.  For most of the second period Spencer 'Lucky' Kwilos displayed why he is the Mite Division best goalie because the Sabres were taking the play to the Blackhawks by outshooting them 20 to 4 thru two periods but could not get anything  by 'Lucky'.  He may need to change that nick-name 'Killer' Kwilos because how many great offensive chances he was killing.

The Sabres were playing the game short-handed because of illness and Religous commitments which forced the Sabres to call-up 3 mini-mites to fill the roster.  But these young boys did not play like they were filler because Matt DeSpirt scored both goals for the Sabres while Ryan Bacon and 'Big' Mike Clouden played solid defense in their first action in the bigtime - MITE Divison.

In solid all-around game, afterwards 'Lucky' was quoted as saying "I need to update my scouting reports to include those 3 because they showed me moves I wasn't expecting especially that #14, Matt DeSpirt."

Sabres - 8      Penguins - 1
With #13 Christian Steiner in net for the Penguins and #7 Brandon Schott in net for the Sabres - both teams gearing up for the up coming Winter Classic. Black Hawks 0   Retro Sabres 0

Earlier this season, the Retro Sabres handed the Black Hawks their first loss in a 1-0 thriller. The rematch was equally thrilling as the team traded chances, but neither side could find the back of the net and the teams skated to a 0-0 tie.

Nathan Lockwood got the shut-out for the Black Hawks and Mike Stuhr put-up a goose-egg for the Retro-Sabres. Both sides skated hard and played good defense.

Timmy Stuart and Nathan Lockwood each scored twice for the Black Hawks.  Eddie Travis, who was the hardest working player on the ice, notched the game winner.

Islanders – 4   Retro Sabres – 1

The Islanders picked up a hard fought and much needed win against a feisty Retro Sabres team before an early morning crowd at the Nike Base by a score of 4-1.  Owen Bean picked up the hat trick for the Islanders but save for Mr. Bean’s performance, the story of the game was the hotly contested goaltending battle between the Islanders’ Jacob Genzel and the Sabres’ Adam “Night” Ranger.

Sabres (white) 2, Capitals 5

The Sabres (white) and Capitals played a late game Sunday. The Capitals came out on top, winning with a final score of 5 to 2. The Sabres first goal was scored by Jay Bergman assisted by Jordan Tasker and the second goal was scored by Jack Hayes assisted by Sean DeLellis. The Sabres goaltender Zach Hector playing a solid game, keeping the game close for the first period.

Although, it was the solid effort of Brandon Hosken of the Capitals that rewarded him with 2 goals this game. It was the continued effort to stay in the play keeping after the puck and smart positioning that provided him with the scoring chances. Brandon’s effort did not go unnoticed by both the coaches and the fans.

The defense stood tall preventing the Sabres from generating many opportunities. Billy Windsor anchored the defensive squad playing a smart game. Also on defense John Kwiatkowski turned in a solid effort for the second game in a row. That led to an assist on Brandon’s second goal. Also defensively, Evan Graesser showed some offensive skill with a couple of nice rushes.

The Capitals other goals were scored by Patrick Hart set up Mitchell Knihinicki. And 2 goals by Mitchell Knihinicki, both unassisted, keeping Mitch the leading scorer on the team.  Keep up the great effort!!!

Sabres (White) - 5,   Blackhawks - 3

Starting off the New Year on a cold wintery day, the kids were ready to start their second half of the season.
Starting in net for the Sabres was #15 Benjamin McEwen and for the Blackhawks was #1 Alex Zdrojewski.

First period: Sabres take the early 2 goal lead with goals by #6 Austin Lederhouse and #3 Kyle Ebert. The Blackhawks gain one back with a goal by #6 Jacob Bystryk.

Second Period: Sabres take another 2 goal lead by #3 Kyle Ebert.  However, goals by the Blackhawks #3 John Seier and #8 Greg Schneider make it tie game at the end of the second period.

Third Period:  Sabres won't be denied a win with many shots on Alex Zdrojewski who easily kept the Blackhawks in the game.  The go ahead goal scored by #3 again (Kyle Ebert) who makes it his first hat trick of the season. The Sabres pulled away with one more goal made by #10 Matt Bartosz to win by a score of 5 to 3.

Honerable mention to Sabres goalie Ben McEwen who made 2 great pad saves in the third period to assist in giving the Sabres the win.

The (White) Sabres continue on their undefeated streak as the second half of their season continues.

Islanders 4    Penguins 2

The Islanders opened the New Year in fine fashion and returned to the win column with a hard fought 4-2 victory over a talented Penguins team.  Jarred Milley opened the scoring and put the Penguins up 1-0 at the 3:51 mark of the first period.  Milley took advantage of some aggressive play from his line mates, scoped up the loose puck and deftly deposited the puck for the Penguins early lead.

The Islanders jumped right back in the fray as Erik Pawelski intercepted a Penguins play and found the net to tie the game at 1-1 at 2:11 of the first period where the score would remain for the rest of the first stanza.

The Islanders needed exactly a full period to hit the score sheet again, but this time it was courtesy of perhaps the finest squirt division assist in the 35 year history of the Hamburg League.  Trevor Fadale corralled a loose puck in his own end and eluded three Penguins’ players to the left of the Pens’ net.  Instead of taking the wide open shot for goal, Fadale expertly and unselfishly threaded the puck to a wide open Pawelski who tapped home the go ahead score for the 2-1 lead at the end of two periods.

With the outcome of the game in the balance, Nick Hornquist erupted for two goals in 44 seconds to give the Isles a stranglehold on the game.  At 6:50 of the third, Hornquist picked a pocket and then found the net for the 3-1 lead and on the ensuing center face off his teammates quickly went back to work.

Danny Vail and Nate Schifferle controlled the puck in the Pens zone, worked a couple of passes until they found Hornquist open for the tally and the 4-1 lead.  Before the third period was over, the Penguins Sam Altes converted a Milley pass to close the gap to 4-2 but could not find another goal.

Goaltender Matt Russo picked up his second victory in goal for the season as the Islanders upped their record to 5-2.

Sirena Fitzery and Jacob Genzel had all around great games for the Islanders.

The next time someone says that there's not much one can do in only a minute, remind them about the Islanders of the Hamburg Municipal Hockey Association's Squirt Division.  The Islanders broke open one of the more evenly played games of the young season with a three goal outburst in one minute and six seconds en route to a 4-0 shutout victory over a talented Capitals team at the Nike Base.
The teams nearly played to a stalemate in the first period until Erik Pawelski found Bryan Solinski for the Islander's first goal.  Pawelski carried the puck in from the red line and head manned the puck to a streaking Solinski you snapped a shot past the prone goalie for a 1-0 lead after one period.
In the second period, both defenses tightened as excellent two way play was demonstrated by both teams.  Joe Argy was a constant threat in the Islander's zone for the Capitals while Jack Rettig kept the Isles at bay.    For the Islanders, Joe Komer played a tremendous defensive game turning aside each Capital's rush he faced.
Jeremy Miska put forth a tremendous effort along with Jacob Genzel who narrowly missed adding to the Islander's lead.  Nathan Schifferle and Sirena Fitzery upped the ante on offense for the Islanders all game long.
With the game still in the balance at the start of the third period, the Islanders put forth one of the finest efforts any hockey team can demonstrate in only one minute and six seconds.  Solinski picked up a lose puck from behind the Capital's net and threaded a nice pass to a wide open Owen Bean who deposited the puck in the lower left hand corner for a 2-0 Islanders advantage only 12 seconds into the third frame.
Off the ensuing face-off, Bean dished off to Pawelski  who split the Caps defense and nearly scored, but Capitals goalie Paul Hackathorn got a piece of the puck to deflect it off the crossbar.  Solinski knocked home the rebound for a 3-0 Islander's lead only 14 seconds later.
The Islanders capped off Solinski's scintillating 66 seconds as he intercepted a loose puck along the left half-wall and sniped a 45-foot wrist shot for a hat trick and the 4-0 final.  Dylan Winter and Trevor Fedale frustrated the Capitals as they tried to make a furious last second comeback.
With two seconds remaining, Winter froze out the Capital's hopes with a great defensive play to preserve Nick Hornquist's shutout.

Islanders  5     Stars  3

A Sunday night standing room only crowd jammed the Nike Base for a hotly contested Squirt Division matchup of two talented teams.  The Islanders and Stars came out defensively and it took nearly half the first period before one team could break the ice, but when they did, it was with alacrity.

The Stars Ben Taylor set up Hangen at 6:12 of the first period to give the green and black a 1-0 lead off a shot from the point.  Less than a minute later, the Islanders answered with a highlight reel goal by Jonah Kozak  (Click here to see Islanders' first goal) on a hard working pass by Nick Hornquist to tie the game at 1-1.

The Stars would take the lead once again with a little more than a minute remaining in the first when Hangen found Matt Bull on a pretty break out to give the Stars a 2-1 advantage at the end of one period of play.

The hard skating Islanders needed only seven seconds from the second period opening faceoff to tie the game once again.  Owen Bean sent away Erik Pawelski with a perfect pass that Pawelski deposited in the Stars net to tie the game at 2-2.  Exactly two minutes later, the Stars took the lead again when Fitzgerald scored on an assist from Gasiewicz to up the score to 3-2 in the Stars advantage.

There would be no more scoring in the second period and for most of the third period until the Islanders exploded with three goals in the final five and a half minutes of the third period.  Pawelski raced first to the puck to slide a pass over to Brian Solinski who tied the game at 3-3.

Two minutes later Joe LoTempio used his size to win the puck and find the net for the second time this season.  Matt Russo won the puck on his wing, made a move to find LoTempio who banged home the biscuit for a 4-3 Islanders advantage.

In the games final minute, "Mr. Setup" Pawelski did it again as he took the play outside and found Solinski for a second time and a second goal and the 5-3 final.  Jacob Genzel earned the win between the pipes.

Blackhawks vs Sabres
The Blackhawks got off to a great start with a 2-1 win over the White Sabres.   The Sabres got on the board first with a quick score off a faceoff by Alexander Dzimian. The Blackhawks answered quickly with a goal by David Hayes assisted by Nathan Lockwood and Timmy Stuart.  In the second period David Hayes struck again for his second goal of the season. Nathan Lockwood again got the helper. That would be it for the scoring and from there, Spencer Kwilos took over. The Blackhawks netminder turned away everything the Sabres threw at him. Hayes saw his bid for the hat trick slip away in the closing seconds as his last shot sailed wide past the left goal post.   Both teams demonstrated how far they have come since the first ice time of the season and had a lot of fun.

Islanders vs. Penguins
The Islanders and Penguins opened their 2009-2010 HMHA schedules in fine fashion on Sunday, November 15, 2009.  A month’s worth of pre-season practice looked to have paid off as two evenly matched teams were ready to go as soon as the puck dropped.  The contest was an exciting affair decided only in the game’s final minutes with the Islanders skating off with a hard fought 3-2 victory.
Only 21 seconds into the first period, the Islanders were able to turn a fortuitous bounce of the puck into their first goal of the season.  Danny Vail scooped up a loose puck at center ice and immediately head manned the puck to a waiting Nick Hornquist who deposited the puck in the back of the Penguins net on the game’s first shot.  The game settled down into a well played affair with momentum sliding back to the Penguins.
A shade over two minutes later, the Penguins tied the game at 1-1.  Ty Gwitt took a feed from Shane Curran after a bout of good hustle by Shelby Kmiodowski to fool the Islanders’ net minder.  For most of the second period, the defenses of both teams took control of the game and it looked as if the middle period might remain scoreless until the Pens got on the board once again.
With 2:45 left in the second period, the Penguins’ David Lauria used his speed and savvy during a line change to give himself a breakaway.  Lauria would not be denied as he gave the Penguins a 2-1 lead heading into the third period.
Two and a half minutes into the third period, one of the two “twin towers of defense” Nate Schiferle stopped a Penguins rush, eluded another player to find Hornquist heading into the Pens’ zone.  One nice pass to the stick of Joe LoTempio provided the spark the Islanders needed to tie the game at 2-2.  It was LoTempio’s first career tally in his first Hamburg hockey game.
With the crowd still in a tizzy, the fleet footed Islanders capitalized on another defense to offense transition.  The second twin tower, Jonah Kozak, scooped up a loose puck off the face off and quickly passed to a waiting LoTempio.  LoTempio wristed a hard shot towards the Penguins net where Jared Lux made one of his numerous saves.  The rebound squirted out to a waiting Vail who scored to give the Islanders a 3-2 lead they would not relinquish.
Ethan Falsone and Ryan Stappleton staged a furious comeback attempt but could not solve winning goaltender Matt Russo in the game’s waning moments.  Sirena Fitzery, Trevor Fadale, and Joey Chambers all helped the Islanders’ cause while Sam Attea was a force for the Pens.

PeeWee

The Capitals goals scored by Phillip Ryerse, Mitchell Knihinicki, Jacob Falcone and a second score by Mitchell Knihinicki. The Sabres goal scored by Alex Pumm spoiling the shut-out bid by Capitals goaltender Josh Capasso. Sabres, Dan Salansky had a great effort with solid play on the body. The Sabres goaltender Gordon Grieble played a solid game, but Capitals persistence eventually provided the win.   Great job guys!!

Penguins vs Sabres
Tristan Reinard backstopped the Penguins in a wide open game against the Sabres.  Kyle Tatar and Mike Boyd led the way with 1G and 1A each while Joe Colosimo and Hunter Kennedy had solo tallies.  Jay Bergman scored the lone goal for the Sabers and Zack Hector was solid in net.

Stars vs Islanders
Final Score: 2-2
This was a wide open hockey game.  Lots of end to end play with nice passing by both teams and lots of great saves by the goalies.  Each team had its share of individual efforts that resulted in lost scoring opportunities and great scoring chances. The hero’s of the game were the goalies.  All three goalies stood on their heads and kept the scoring low.
The Stars jumped out to the early lead when Alex Suchan carried the puck end to end scoring the first goal of the game at 6:32 of the first peried.  The scoring remained scoreless the remainder of the period.
The Islanders pressure was not going to be denied as the Islanders Calvin Gath took a pass from Joshua Best to break thru center on a break away tucking the puck thru the legs of Matt Buss of the Stars at 9:02 of the second period to tie up the game at 1-1.   On the face off immediately following the goal Alex Suchan carried the puck from the face of to behind the net passing the puck out front to Jacob Walsh who batted the puck out of the air into the back of the net to take a 2-1 lead at 8:48 of the second period.   The lead was short lived as Calvin Gath took another pass from Joshua Best to even the score at 2 with 39 seconds remaining in the second period.

The cerfew shortened third period was filled with great goal tending and opportunities by both teams. There was no scoring in the third period so the game ended in a 2-2 tie.

Bean opened the scoring at the 6:28 mark of the first period with a pretty unassisted goal to give the Islanders a 1-0 first period lead.  Both Ranger and Genzel turned aside numerous opportunities to keep the game 1-0 after one period.

In the second period, the Islanders Jonah Kozak picked up a loose puck at center ice and maneuvered past two Sabres to gain the zone.  Kozak then gifted a beautiful drop pass to a trailing Joe LoTempio who “sniped” a one-timer in the upper right hand corner for a 2-0 Isles’ lead early in the second stanza.  Throughout the period the Islanders Jeremy Miska and Sirena Fitzery played perhaps their best hockey of the season. Once again both goaltenders continued their hot play.  The Islanders continued to put on pressure with the combination of defensive to offensive transition with Nick Hornquist starting numerous rushes setting up Joe Kromer and Joey Chambers.  The game stayed with a two goal Islanders advantage until the 3:36 mark of the second period.  The Islanders own incarnation of the spirit of Adam Oates, Trevor Fadale, threaded another one of his trademark passes to Bean who scored to give the Islanders a 3-0 advantage.

The line of Nathan Schifferle, Matt Russo, and Kozak produced endless pressure with assistance from the heady passing of Danny Vail but were turned aside by Ranger.  In the first shift of the third period, Bean earned his hat trick on another pass from Fadale with Bryan Solinski picking up the other helper.

The Retro Sabres would not be denied as their incredible heart kept them plugging away shift after shift without fail.  Only the fine goaltending of Genzel kept the “swords” off the board.  The Retro bunch’s persistence finally paid off at the 3:07 mark of the third period.

Brad Logan outmuscled the Islanders defense to get the puck to a waiting Michael Ventresca who fired a shot into the Islanders net for the 4-1 final.

Blackhawks-2     Capitals-0
